Statement of Significance

ELTHAM STUDY STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE:

The Poplar Cottage property is apparently one of the oldest surviving farm house sites in the Nutfield area and the Lombardy Poplars and other mature exotic planting are associated with and remnants of the farm house garden around the cottage. The form and size of these trees makes them local landmarks and mature exotic trees are quite rare in this area.

REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE (with AHC criteria)

The Poplar Cottage or Kinrade farm house and the surrounding mature trees are significant to the Nutfield area:

- as one of the oldest surviving farm houses in the Nutfield area, expressive of early land selection and the later orcharding boom in the area (Criterion A4);

- for the long association with district pioneers, the Kinrade family (Criterion H1);

- for the visual prominence of the Lombardy Poplars and other mature exotic planting, the form and size of the poplars makings them local landmarks (Criterion E1) ; and

- for the relative rarity of these mature exotic trees in this area (Criterion B2).
