Miss Meglin's House & Special School 3660.

What is significant?
Fabric associated with Augusta Meglin's 1904 farm house (together with a domed well which is located in the paddock near Yan Yean Road), the 1934 red brick school building, a row of Italian Cypresses and two mature Oak trees at the Diamond Creek entry.

How is it significant?
The farm house is historically and aesthetically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.

The school building is historically, architecturally and socially significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.

The Italian Cypresses and mature Oaks are historically and aesthetically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.

Why is it significant?
The farm house is historically significant for its association with Sulina Sutherland and the Sutherland homes for neglected and destitute children, whose work was recognised across the State (Criteria A & H). It is historically and aesthetically significant as an early example of a farm house in the area and because, unusually, it features vertical boards and battens and a curved transition between the roof lines (Criteria B & E).

The school is historically significant because it is associated with the above house, Sulina Sutherland and the Sutherland homes for neglected and destitute children (Criteria A & H). Architecturally, it is a good example of an intact brick school building of the 1930s (Criterion D). The school is socially significant because it served the community over an extended period of time, only closing in the 1980s (Criterion G).
