REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, CONTEXT, 2010 What is significant?
How is it significant? The school building is historically, architecturally and socially significant to the Shire of Nillumbik. The Italian Cypresses and mature Oaks are historically and aesthetically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.
Why is it significant? The school is historically significant because it is associated with the above house, Sulina Sutherland and the Sutherland homes for neglected and destitute children (Criteria A & H). Architecturally, it is a good example of an intact brick school building of the 1930s (Criterion D). The school is socially significant because it served the community over an extended period of time, only closing in the 1980s (Criterion G).
BUTLER STUDY, 2001 - as an early farm house in the district with unusual details and an intact brick school building of the 1930s, with long-term associations among the residents of the Shire and former pupils - for the two buildings' association with Sulina Sutherland and the Sutherland Homes for Neglected and Destitute Children whose work was recognised across the State.
Fabric associated with Augusta Meglin's 1904 farm house (together with a domed well which is located in the paddock near Yan Yean Road), the 1934 red brick school building, a row of Italian Cypresses and two mature Oak trees at the Diamond Creek entry.
The farm house is historically and aesthetically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.
