Statement of Significance

What is significant?

'Wingilla', comprising the house constructed c.1935 and the associated mature garden including the Canary Island Palms, at 1 Bluff Road, Cannon's Creek.


How is it significant?

'Wingilla' is of local historic, aesthetic and scientific (archaeological) significance to the City of Casey.


Why is it significant?

Historically, it is significant for its associations with some of the district's old families, such as the Bretts, as well as representing an early use of a prime coastal site as a refuge from Melbourne life. (AHC criteria A4, D2 and H1)

Aesthetically, it is significant as a well preserved example of domestic architectural and garden styles of the 1920s-30s. The setting of the house is enhanced by the mature trees, particularly the Canary Island Palms. (AHC criteria E1)

Scientifically, it is of archaeological significance as a site that possesses a rich history of the settlement of this locality, with possible artefacts surviving from the nineteenth century. (AHC criterion C2)
