What is significant?
The first section of Xavier College commenced in 1872 with the South Wing designed by Kelly, Dennehy and Tappin with a grand Victorian facade. The West Wing was built in 1889 in a Classical design, and Great Hall added in 1890, both extensions to the design of Kelly, Dennehy and Tappin. In 1927 the foundation stone for a chapel was laid, which was completed in 1934 in the Baroque style to a design by the architectural firm Schrieber and Jorgensen.

Xavier College is historically important for its association with Catholic education in Victoria. Xavier College is architecturally important because of the combination of late Victorian buildings designed by the architects Tappin, Gilbert and Dennehy which illustrate good design and aesthetic characteristics of the firm. The college chapel is of architectural importance in exhibiting good design.
