Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The Oak Park Reserve, in Josephine Street, Oak Park.

How is it significant?
The Oak Park Reserve, in Josephine Street, Oak Park is of local historic significance to the City of Moreland. It is also possibly of State significance.

Why is it significant?
Of historic significance, as a remnant section, over 150 years old, of the rear garden of John Pascoe Fawkner's Belle Vue Park Estate, the site of his large and influential nursery dating from 1840 to 1855. Remnant trees on the site, including an oak, cypresses and peppercorn trees, have been estimated to date from Fawkner's residency. The park's close proximity to the site of the original homestead of which it was once part, and the visibility of the extended c.1880 homestead from the park, enhance Oak Park Reserve's ability to demonstrate this important part of Victoria's history.
