How is it significant?
Why is it significant?
The terrace at 233-239 Brunswick Road, Brunswick, constructed by
Chivers & Gorer in 1888 for John Chivers is significant. The front
fences and non-original alterations and additions are not significant.
The terrace at 233-239 Brunswick Road, Brunswick, is of local
historical, representative and aesthetic significance to the City of
Moreland.
It is significant as evidence of the speculative housing erected
in Brunswick during the 'Boom' period of the late 1880s and especially
of the grander houses built in the more salubrious southern end of
Brunswick on the main thoroughfares of Brunswick Road and Park Street,
close to the Carlton/Parkville border and parklands. (Criterion A)
It is significant as fine and well-detailed example of a Victorian
era terrace row in the Italianate style. The terrace has typical form
and detailing including the ornate balustraded parapet, with a
decorated pediment centred over each dwelling and ball finials; a
dentil cornice below the parapet and a two-level cast iron verandah,
which retains much of the original delicate cast iron frieze and
brackets, and cast iron fluted verandah posts with Corinthian
capitals, and tessellated tile floors. Of note is the treatment of the
ground floor facade, which features banded rustication, deep rendered
hood moulds and impost moulds around window and door openings, and
deeply recessed four panelled timber entry doors with side and
highlights. (Criteria D & E)
