What is significant?

The property at 40 Graysharps Road, Hurstbridge with a residence constructed in circa 1923. The original form, materials and detailing of the residence is integral to its significance.

Any post 1920s alterations and additions to the residence and other buildings on the site are not significant.

How is it significant?

The property at 40 Graysharps Road, Hurstbridge is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the Shire of Nillumbik.

Why is it significant?

The property at 40 Graysharps Road, Hurstbridge is historically significant for associations with the once prosperous orchard industry in the Hurstbridge District and the role of Hurstbridge as the commercial centre to this industry and district in the early 20th century. The residence is the only surviving remnant of the Cool Store complex established near the Hurstbridge Railway Station soon after the extension from Eltham was completed. The site is also important for its associations with prominent resident Martha Wilson who had the residence constructed in circa 1923 and was proprietress of the Cool Store complex in the 1920s. Located within the central area of Hurstbridge, the property contributes to the significant early 20th Century streetscape history of the township and in particular the establishment of Hurstbridge as a commercial centre for the area during the 1920s. The property at 748 Heidelberg-Kinglake Road, Hurstbridge is aesthetically significant as a substantially intact example of a weatherboard inter-war bungalow. Key features of the style include the overall all encompassing gable roof form with a projecting gable wing to one side, projecting gable verandah to the front with stucco and timber strapping to the gable end, tall narrow brick chimneys, twin timber framed double hung windows, weatherboard cladding and other timber framed openings. The residence is significant for its location behind the Hurstbridge Railway Station indicating the location of the now removed Cool Store Complex. (Criterion E)
