Statement of Significance

What is significant?
Robbies Mill was established at Narbethong in 1934, and operated in its later years as a transition mill where the use of road and tramway technology can be demonstrated side by side. The site features extensive remains of the mill building, including sawbench and drive shaft foundations, mill uprights, bearers and framing timbers. Robbies Mill was also the focus of a large community, and there are substantial remains from the residential part of the site, including an old road formation, fruit trees, collapsed chimneys and domestic debris.

How is it significant?
Robbies Mill is of archaeological significance to the State of Victoria.

Why is it significant?
Robbies Mill is archaeologically significant for its potential to provide evidence relating to the technological history of sawmilling. The remains demonstrate well the layout of a typical sawmill from the final period of bush sawmilling, including the position of the individual sawbenches and the sawdust removal system. Domestic artefacts from the site also have the potential to provide evidence relating to the cultural history of sawmilling settlements.
