Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The Lower Goodwood Kilns were constructed in 1931 by Limberlost Lumber Mills, to meet the growing demand in Melbourne for seasoned timber. Forest seasoning kilns are a rare feature in Victoria, and the Goodwood kilns are among the largest and best preserved in the State. The site features seven intact concrete kiln chambers, including rail foundations, cross-pipe bracing and air ducts. Each kiln is 2.40 metres in height, and 10.50 metres deep.

How is it significant?
The Lower Goodwood Kilns are of historical significance to the State of Victoria.

Why is it significant?
The Lower Goodwood Kilns are historically significant as an early and remarkably intact example of the timber seasoning process in Victoria. The kiln drying and reconditioning process transformed the production of seasoned eucalypt hardwoods, and remains the first and most essential value-adding process in the Australian timber industry.
