Statement of Significance

REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, CONTEXT, 2010

What is significant?
The entire pre-1904 miner's timber slab cottage and the site to a radius of 15 metres.

How is it significant?
The cottage is technically and historically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.

Why is it significant?
The cottage is historically significant because it illustrates the very basic housing that was the lot of many Victorians in the 19th and early 20th centuries and is a reminder of the role that gold mining played in the development of the Shire of Nillumbik (Criterion A). The cottage is technically and historically significant as a rare surviving example of a slab cottage constructed using vernacular building techniques; the survival of the cottage's bark roof, the interior of white-washed wattle and daub walls and the hessian bag ceiling is particularly unusual (Criteria B & D).
