Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The Commercial Hotel, a single storey timber and brick building, is located on the Casterton-Edenhope Road in the centre of the township of Sandford. The hotel is set on an unusually large allotment, which extends down to the Creek behind. Its location is also interesting, being on the intersection of the main Portland-Casterton Road and the road across the creek to "Irish Town", where a community of Irish immigrants had taken up small allotments. The hotel has been located on the same site from 1872, when it was the third hotel in the town. It is now the only surviving hotel. The hotel is in good condition, but unsympathetic alterations have reduced its integrity.

How is it significant?
The Commercial is of historical significance to the Glenelg Shire.

Why is it significant?
The Commercial Hotel is of historical significance as the only surviving hotel in the township, and as its role as an important meeting places for the community in the early stage of the town's development. It is of further historical significance for its location, sited to serve both the 'respectable' folk of Sandford, as well as those who were ostracised from the community to an extent in the early period of the township, those from "Irish Town" on the other side of the Creek.
