Statement of Significance

The former Private Hospital, built in 1875, was designed by William Vahland for Dr Henry Crosson. The two storeyed, rendered building with a timber and cast iron balcony and verandah (built later) was originally a residence which included rooms for medical purposes.

The former Private Hospital is of architectural and historic significance to Victoria.

The former Private Hospital represents an elegant example of a residence combined with a business, in which the building's function as a surgery is evident from the applied ornamentation and the extended verandah which is characteristic of a commercial business.

The Building is a rare example of an early private hospital which demonstrates an association with the medical profession through the application of crosses in its parapet. The building also demonstrates a continuous sequence of usage within the medical profession.

The former Private Hospital is an example of work by the pre-eminent Central Goldfields architect, W C Vahland, who was responsible for many residential designs for professionals. The building demonstrates rich and distinctive ornamentation, especially the pediment which incorporates the unusual use of crosses combined with Moorish motifs.
