The Flemington Police Station and Lock Up form part of a complex of public buildings designed by AJ McDonald for the Public Works Department.

The Flemington Police Station designed in 1890 and Lock Up designed in 1891 comprise a group of picturesque and unusual buildings which, together with the adjoining court house, form an outstanding group of public buildings designed by AJ McDonald under the Public Works Department district architect, JT Kelleher.

The police station and lock up represent a substantially intact and excellent example of the work of A J McDonald whose contribution to the "battle of styles" marked a highpoint in the development of architectural importance by the Public Works Department.

The Flemington Police Station and Lock Up are major contributors to an important 19th century streetscape.
