Statement of Significance

Coronal, 9 Lewes Drive, East Malvern, is a two storey former mansion with tower constructed in 1890. It enjoys high local significance as a rare surviving house from a small group of mansion estates that once existed in the area, surrounded by farm land. It is thought to be the only towered nineteenth century mansion surviving in East Malvern, and would seem to be the easternmost surviving, substantially intact representative of the nineteenth century mansions which once ranged across the present Stonnington area from South Yarra to East Malvern, contributing substantially to the character and prestige of the area. It stands in relative isolation with resprect to its peers within the municipality.

Coronal is distinct from other extant mansions in the municipality through its use of a relatively severe architectural expression based on vernacular Italian antecedents and simple, face brick construction.

Alterations undertaken in 1939 in order to convert the house to flats have resulted in relatively slight, superficial changes to its overall character, but have allowed it to integrate to a superior extent with the general interwar character of Lewes Drive, and as such is the centrepiece of its immediate built environment.
