Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The Post-war weatherboard house, at 3670 Meeniyan-Promontory Road, Yanakie, constructed c.1958, is significant. The wide, single storey domestic residence h as a low pitched, hip roof with a major transverse element with a lower, projecting him at the rear. Other key features include: 
Non-original alterations and additions, other than those specified above, are not of heritage significance.
How is it significant?
The Postwar weatherboard house, at 3670 Meeniyan-Promontory Road, Yanakie is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, this house is one of a number of Soldier Settlement houses and farms in the Yanakie area, built on Millar, Promontory and Foley Roads. These houses were provided to returned soldiers and their families following World War II. This building demonstrates the growth and development of Soldier Settlement Scheme in Yanakie during the Postwar era. (Criterion A) 
Aesthetically, this is considered the most intact house that is part of the Yanakie Soldier Settlement Scheme. This house demonstrates the simple form and design that was repeated across Yanakie. While most of these houses have since had alterations and extensions, the few external changes within the property at 3670 Meeniyan-Promontory Road are largely reversible. This house is in close proximity to the Yanakie General Store, demonstrating the community element of the Soldier Settlement Scheme in Yanakie and close relationship between the residential farms and the commercial elements.
