Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The Welshpool Hotel, at 21-23 Main Street, Welshpool, constructed in c.1908, is significant. This painted brick, single storey hip and valley structure features a small projecting front side bay with splayed corner and a straight roofed street verandah returning the length of the main hotel building. Regularly spaced double hung windows with small, rendered panels make up majority of the façade, along with separate entry doors to the bar and the residence. It also contains exposed eaves, shortened square stop chamfered verandah posts on brick pedestals and evidence of previous neck moulds and cast-iron work attached to the verandah (since lost). Non-original alterations and additions are not significant.
How is it significant?
The Welshpool Hotel is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, the Welshpool Hotel is the oldest commercial building in Welshpool, with some evidence that there may have been an earlier hotel on this site prior to c.1908. The early date of this hotel demonstrates the early development of this area of the South Gippsland Shire. (Criterion A) Aesthetically, the single storey Victorian Hotel, although missing original details such as the cast iron lacework and neck moulds, is a typical representation of this style of building. The hotel also plays an important aesthetic role in the streetscape of Welshpool and has become a key landmark within this part of the South Gippsland Shire for over 100 years. (Criterion E)
