Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The former Butter Factory Manager's Residence, at 2 Stony Creek-Dollar Road, Stony Creek, built in 1904, is significant. The symmetrical weatherboard hip and valley Victorian villa has a central front verandah supported by square timber posts. The building has a central door without sidelights and flanked by single, double hung windows in the front elevation. The house includes a single corbelled brick chimney. Non-original alterations and additions, other than those specified above, are not significant.
How is it significant?
The former Butter Factory Manager's Residence at 2 Stony Creek-Dollar Road is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, it is one of the oldest dwellings in the town, after being built in 1904 for Wood and Co., for the express purpose of being the Butter Factory Manager's residence. This is the only building left in the town that is associated with the Stony Creek Butter Factory. The other factory-owned dwelling, a residence for the Factory engineer, was demolished many years ago. This demonstrates the influence of the Stony Creek Butter Factory and associated farming Cooperatives upon the development and growth of the township. It also demonstrates the industrial development of Stony Creek and the South Gippsland Shire. (Criteria A) Aesthetically, the former Butter Factory Manager's Residence makes an important contribution to the aesthetic and historic streetscape of Stony Creek. Additionally, this house illustrates the classic elements of a simplified Victorian villa in a key location, near other heritage buildings such as the Stony Creek Public Hall (see SC-MA-HA). (Criteria E)
