RUBY PUBLIC HALL

The Ruby Public Hall, at 7 Dykes Road, Ruby, built in 1894, is significant. The timber clad Federation style hall with low-pitched gable roof has three roofline vents and three facade vents near the tea-room/skillion entry area. The skillion area has a porch attached near the main, wide, entry door. The building also has single rectangular windows and a weatherboard dado below window height on the longer elevations. Four flag poles stand as part of the skillion area. 
Non-original alterations and additions, other than those specified above, are not significant.

The Ruby Public Hall, at 7 Dykes Road, Ruby, is of local historic, aesthetic and social significance to the South Gippsland Shire.

Historically, the Ruby Hall is one of only a few pre-1900 public halls in the South Gippsland Shire. It is also believed to be the oldest building in the Ruby area having opened on 24 May, 1894. The school was opened in the Hall late in 1894 after lobbying by the local community for a school. This building demonstrates the growth of the community and the development within Ruby and the broader South Gippsland Shire following the opening of the South Eastern railway in 1891. (Criterion A) 
Aesthetically, the Ruby Hall is a substantially intact and has good integrity. It is one of the few public buildings within the Ruby area. This building significantly contributes to the aesthetic and heritage character of the township of Ruby and the South Gippsland Shire. (Criterion E) 
Socially, the Ruby Hall played a significant role in the development of the Ruby community and the growth of the Ruby township. Not only did it function as a place of gathering for the community, but also as a church and as a school for the Ruby community. The Hall greatly contributes to the identity of the Ruby township and their connection to the early development of the area. (Criterion G)
