Statement of Significance
What is significant?
Beltrassna, at 9284 South Gippsland Highway, Ruby, constructed in c.1903, is significant. This asymmetrical Transitional Victorian/Federation Villa is weatherboard in construction with projecting gabled at the front and to the side. The projecting gables are bracketed from the walls and feature pressed metal on the front gable and battened weatherboards on the side gable. The return bullnose verandah is supported by cast iron posts and a cast iron frieze, which is rare for the area. There are three-part double hung windows in the main rooms, with scalloped ends below windowsills and windowsills. The exterior is sheeted in false ashlar boards and the roof features three corbelled chimneys. Non-original alterations and additions are not significant.
How is it significant?
The Beltrassna homestead is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, Beltrassna demonstrates the second phase of development in this area of South Gippsland, following the 1898 bushfires that devastated the region and also after the establishment of the first co-operative butter factory in the area. (Criterion A) Aesthetically, this homestead is a superior example of a Transitional Victorian/Federation villa. It is particularly notable for its decorative detail and cast-iron verandah, which is one of only two known examples within the Shire. Additionally, it is on a rise overlooking the main thoroughfare of the South Gippsland Highway, making it a local landmark. (Criterion E)
