How is it significant?
'The Pines' is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the township of the South Gippsland Shire. 'The Pines' is also strongly associated with the Rainbow family.
Why is it significant?
Historically, 'The Pines' is the oldest homestead in Moyarra and the surrounds, being constructed in 1897. The building was built by the Rainbow Family who were important figures in the Moyarra community. It is one of only a small number of homesteads to survive the disastrous bushfires of 1898 that destroyed many of the buildings in the South Gippsland region at the time. This homestead and its surrounding outbuildings demonstrate the early settlement and development of Moyarra and surrounding district in the South Gippsland Shire. It also illustrates one depth of history in this part of the South Gippsland Shire. (Criterion A)
Aesthetically this is a substantially intact and recognisable example of an early homestead set up by free settlers. In addition, this building has only had minor changes throughout its lifetime, and all changes that have been made are sympathetic to the building. The outbuildings throughout the immediate surroundings of the homestead are significant to the aesthetics and history of the building. 'The Pines' significantly contributes to the aesthetic and historic character of Moyarra and the surrounding district. (Criterion E)
'The Pines' was the main homestead of William Rainbow, a locally significant figure in the establishment of Moyarra and the surrounds. William Rainbow purchased the land originally selected by John Gannon, which extended to where is now the former Moyarra School (see MO-ANIN-PS). Of the 320 acres owned by the Rainbow family that Mr Rainbow donated one acre of his land to build the former Moyarra leased school, illustrating his sense of community and connection with the region.
