The private house formerly owned by locally renown Adam Ogilvy at 58 Ridgway, Mirboo North, built in c.1905, is significant. The late Victorian asymmetrical home has a projecting front gable and bay window with a convex return verandah with square stop chamfered verandah posts. The verandah has simple timber frets as decorations and decorated eaves in paired brackets with 'cricket bat' dentils below the verandah gutter, although the side verandah is an addition. The home also features two corbelled brick chimneys, a three-part double hung window as part of the gable and a panelled door with sidelights. Non-original alterations and additions, other than those specified above, are not significant.
How is it significant?
The former Adam Ogilvy residence at 58 Ridgway is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the South Gippsland Shire Council. The building is also strongly associated with Adam Ogilvy, a local Councillor and Valuer.
Why is it significant?
Historically, the private house was built in c.1905 and it believed to be one of the oldest dwellings in Mirboo North. Around 1895, Adam Ogilvy built this home for his family though Rate Books fail to record the existence of a residence until 1907. The house was later purchased to be used as the local Butter Factory Manager's residence until the early 1950's. This house illustrates the early residential development of Mirboo North, particularly along this part of Ridgway which was, and still is, a mix of residential and commercial properties. The house also demonstrates the reuse of buildings within the Shire as both private, commercial and public buildings. (Criteria A) Aesthetically, it is a superior example of a late Victorian villa, especially in such a commercial area. The building significantly contributes to the streetscape of Ridgway and the historic and aesthetic character of Mirboo North. This significance can be seen in the context of the property, adjacent to the former Colonial Bank of Australasia and a Victorian shop (see MI-RI-060, MI-RI-062). (Criteria E) This home was built for Mr. Adam L Ogilvy, an accountant and magistrate in the Shire of Woorayl. He also played a key role in the separation of the Shires of Woorayl and Narracan to be the Shire of Mirboo. Mr Ogilvy became the Shire valuer at the Shire of Mirboo, and became an important figure within the community. The significant influence that Mr Ogilvy had over the district contributes to the significance of this property due to its close association with him. (Criterion H)
