Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The John Campbell Homestead, at 270 Toomeys Creek Road, Mardan, built c. 1897, is significant. The weatherboard late Victorian symmetrical villa is doublefronted with a hip and valley roofline and single chimney. There is a return bullnose verandah with which was originally convex, but has since been replaced with a straight roof to the North and West. 
Non-original alterations and additions, other than those specified above, are not significant.
How is it significant?
The John Campbell Homestead, at 270 Toomeys Creek Road, Mardan, is of local historic significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically the John Campbell homestead is one of the oldest homesteads within the Shire, and one of only a small number of rural homesteads that survived the 1898 fires that devastated the South Gippsland. It demonstrates the important early phase of settlement and development of South Gippsland following the selection period. The John Campbell homestead is one of the three original Campbell homesteads that exist in close proximity to each other on Toomeys Creek Road, and have been continuously associated with the Campbell family. The Campbell's were one of the earliest families to reside in Mardan and has a significant influence on the early development of the community and district. (Criterion A)
