Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The Leongatha Croquet Club Pavilion at 52B Roughead Street, Leongatha, built in 1930, is significant. The simple timber gabled Interwar club house has a return flat roof verandah to the North, West and East, a single corbelled chimney, and single bank of windows either side of the narrow entry door. There are two flag poles attached to the South of the building. Other contributory features include the entire croquet lawn and the 'Welcome to Leongatha Croquet Club' sign. Non-original alterations and additions, other than those specified above, are not significant.
How is it significant?
The Leongatha Croquet Club Pavilion is of local historic and aesthetic significant to the South Gippsland Shire. It is also significant to the Shire as it is a rare type of building in the region, representative of sporting clubs at the time.
Why is it significant?
Historically, this site represents the growth of Leongatha and its community facilities during the Interwar era and demonstrates the development of Leongatha as regional hub for South Gippsland. (Criterion A) The Leongatha Croquet Club Pavilion is the only Interwar sporting pavilion in the South Gippsland Shire. The Croquet Pavilion demonstrates the importance of sporting clubs within the Leongatha and South Gippsland community during this time. It also represents the importance of community groups to the South Gippsland Shire. (Criterion D) Aesthetically, the pavilion is still in good condition and has not lost its Interwar style, including its domestic appearance and its corbel topped chimney. The croquet green is still in playing condition and provides context and meaning to the pavilion. The Leongatha Croquet Pavilion and Lawn significantly contribute to the aesthetic and historic character of Leongatha. (Criterion E)
