What is significant? Aesthetically, although diminished in size, the surviving shops are significant as a representative example of a simple, though well detailed example of a Federation brick shop. (AHC criterion E1)
The former Leongatha Cooperative Stores, constructed c.1911, at 13 Roughead Street, Leongatha.
Why is it significant?
The former Leongatha Coooperative Stores are of local historic and aesthetic significance to the town of Leongatha.
Historically, they demonstrate the development of Leongatha during the Federation period following the establishment of the Butter Factory and the early importance of Roughead Street as part of the commercial centre. (AHC criteria A4 & D2)
