Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The Falconer's Building at 13 Radovick Street, Korumburra, built in 1893, is significant. This single storey brick shop with gable roof with a straight profile street verandah. Above the verandah is a rendered brick parapet with a central pediment and side piers. The central pediment is surmounted by a segmental cornice, scrolls and a spherical urn. The building has moulded capping. 
Non-original alterations and additions, other than those specified above, are not significant.
How is it significant?
The Falconer 's Building is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the South Gippsland Shire. The building is also strongly associated with its namesake, Mr Neil Falconer.
Why is it significant?
Historically, the Falconer's Building is assumed to be built by the owner Mr Neil Falconer, as he was a renown builder in the region. This building is one of the oldest commercial buildings in Korumburra and demonstrates the initial phase of development in Korumburra in the period after the opening of the South Eastern Railway in 1891. (Criterion A)
Aesthetically, the building is a superior, intact example of a late Victorian commercial shop with a notable parapet. The parapet design is unique to the region and still remains largely intact, including bearing the Falconer name and establishment year. This building contributes significantly to the aesthetic and historic character of Korumburra and Radovick Street. (Criterion E) 
The building is named for Mr Neil Falconer, who lived in Korumburra and surrounding areas as a notable building contractor. His final major commission prior to leaving the district was the Korumburra Primary School Infant Room in 1913 (see KOR-MI-PS). Through his work, and the building that bears his name, Mr Falconer has left a legacy of buildings throughout South Gippsland that significantly contribute to its history and aesthetics.
