Statement of Significance

What is significant?
St. Paul's Anglican Church complex, at 5 Bridge Street, Korumburra, comprising the church designed by Gawler & Drummond and built in 1927 and tower addition of 1962, and the Church Hall built in 1953, is significant. St Paul's is an interwar Arts & Crafts Gothic church constructed of red brick and consists of a simple gable structure with stepped buttresses and a later square brick tower with buttressed corners. The main building has a projecting gabled bay with lancet windows with tracery and a foundation stone and an octagonal apse facing North-West (towards Radovick Street). Lancet windows with label moulds to windows and doors feature throughout the building and a large stained glass rose window is positioned above the projecting bay on Queen Street. The square brick tower with buttressed corners, castellated parapet, clocks, a large illuminated cross, and double timber entry door with a Tudor arch.
Internal features include tuck pointed brick interior walls and pointed arches above the chancel, which has a timber dado, stained glass memorial windows and timber scissor trusses to the ceiling.
The church hall is a rectangular brick building with gabled roof concealed behind a plain stepped parapet with a rendered cross and small sign. The facade comprises a double entry door placed off centre, and three narrow windows with brick sills below a rendered hood that extends to form a canopy above the entry. The foundation stone is beneath one of the windows.
Non-original alterations and additions, other than those specified above, are not significant.
How is it significant?
St. Paul's Anglican Church and Hall, is of local historic, social and aesthetic significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, St. Paul's is associated with the growth of Korumburra during the early twentieth century, which resulted in the need for a larger church to serve the congregation. The associated church hall demonstrates the status of St Paul's as the parish centre and the size of the congregation in the Postwar era. (Criterion A)
Aesthetically, St Paul's is a fine and well-detailed example of an Interwar Arts & Crafts Gothic church with typical features such as the buttressed walls and label moulds to lancet windows. Notable features include the central windows with tracery including the large rose window, while the simply detailed interior is enhanced by stained glass memorial windows, tuck pointed brickwork and timber trusses. Situated on a prominent corner, the church and tower are a landmark within Korumburra. (Criterion E)
St Paul's has social value for its strong and enduring associations with the local community through its use as a church and parish centre, which has been a focal point of the local Anglican congregation for almost 100 years. (Criterion G)
