Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The Good Samaritan Convent, designed by Mr Harper and constructed by Mr Firth in 1914, at 4 Guys Road, Korumburra.
How is it significant?
St. Joseph's Catholic Church complex, Korumburra, is of local historic, aesthetic and social significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically and socially, along with the adjacent school, it was the second stage of the ambitious building program by the Catholic Church that culminated in the new Church in 1939. It therefore demonstrates the important role of the Catholic congregation in the development of Korumburra and its district, and has important connections with the adjacent St Joseph's School. (AHC criteria - A.4, D.2 and G.1) Aesthetically, it is a locally rare and substantially intact example of Federation bungalow design applied to a school building, and is an integral part of the Korumburra Catholic Church complex. (AHC criterion - E.1)
