Statement of Significance
What is significant?
Foreman's Buildings, at 97 Commercial Street, Korumburra, built in c.1892, is significant. This attached, single storey Victorian brick commercial building includes an original decorative parapet and original interior fabric such as the pressed metal ceilings. There is also a suspending awning linked to the original parapet. Non-original alterations and additions, other than those specified above, are not significant.
How is it significant?
The Foreman's Building is of local historic and aesthetic significance to South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, this building was constructed in 1891-92 after the land was purchased by Mr W. Foreman in the first Korumburra land sales in January 1888. This shop is one of the oldest commercial buildings in the Shire and one of a small group of buildings that demonstrate the initial phases of commercial development in Korumburra immediately following the opening of the South Eastern Railway in 1891. (Criterion A) Aesthetically, No. 97 is the most original of this bank of shops by the original Victorian parapet, and contributes to the aesthetic and historic character of Korumburra. This building is now part of the Commercial Street precinct that aesthetically defines Korumburra and reflects the strong commercial heritage of the town. (Criterion E)
