Statement of Significance

What is significant?
'Lynton House', at 73 Commercial Street, Korumburra, built c.1930, is significant. This two- and three-storey red brick Interwar commercial building (depending on the frontage) with an octagonal oriel tower with pyramidal roof and flagpole on the corner of Commercial and Radovick Streets. The building has a rendered upper parapet and tower, including string moulds on springing and sills. The windows of the main building are deeply recessed, arched, metal framed fanlight windows with timber casements. The corner tower has narrow multi-pane windows on each face of the tower and under each fanlight window on both street faces. 
Non-original alterations and additions, other than those specified above, are not significant.
How is it significant?
'Lynton House', at 73 Commercial Street, Korumburra, is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, the exact date of construction for 'Lynton House' is unknown, though it is believed to have been built c.1930. This building represents the continued development of Korumburra through the Interwar period, and in particular the continued commercial development of Commercial Street and the top of Radovick Street during this time. (Criterion A) 
Aesthetically, 'Lynton House' marks the formal entry to Radovick Street, one of the oldest streets in Korumburra. 'Lynton House' is a substantial and unique example of an Interwar commercial building with a large Interwar brick parapet, a combination of red brick and rendered exterior styling, an octagonal oriel tower and multi-pane, fanlight windows. This local landmark makes a distinctive and significant contribution to the historic and aesthetic character of Korumburra. (Criterion E)
