What is significant?
The pair of brick Federation commercial buildings at 7-9 Commercial Street, Korumburra are significant. These shops consist of a brick and rendered parapet concealing a skillion roof behind. The parapet is divided into three by pilasters with barrel caps with a scrolled render frieze at the top of the parapet above the 2 shopfronts. Shop No. 7 maintains its original shopfront, though not the door.
Non-original alterations and additions, other than those specified above, including the suspended awning that replaced the original street verandah, are not significant.
How is it significant?
The shops at 7-9 Commercial Street, Korumburra are of local historic and aesthetic significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, these buildings demonstrate the growth of the commercial centre of Korumburra during the coal mining industry boom in the town. The area at the intersection of Commercial and Bridge Streets was one of the first areas to develop in Korumburra and soon became the commercial and civic centre of the town. This pair of buildings also represents the history of continued commercial use of these buildings within Korumburra. This pair of buildings may have housed the chemist and doctors that have been photographed in this part of Commercial Street. (Criterion A)
Aesthetically, these shops are a significant example of the Federation commercial style with advanced design elements. The styling of the parapets with distinctive brick and render contrasts, and the intact original shopfront at 7 Commercial Street, makes a significant contribution to the historic and aesthetic character of Commercial Street and Korumburra more broadly.
