Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The former Hazel Park State School No. 4363, at 547 Hazel Park Road, Hazel Park, built c.1929, is significant. It is a small gabled weatherboard building, rectangular in plan, with four evenly spaced four-over-four pane timber sash windows in the side walls, and a small gabled entry porch at the north end. Non-original alterations and additions, including the skillion addition at the south end, are not significant.
How is it significant?
The former Hazel Park State School No. 4363, is of local historic and representative significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, it is associated with the development of Hazel Park after World War I, when closer settlement resulted in the need for a permanent school to serve the district. As the only public building it played an important role in community development and remained the heart of the Hazel Park district until its closure in 1969. (Criterion A) It is significant as a rare example of a school provided by local residents and leased to the Education Department. It is notable because very few of these locally built schools were constructed after 1910 when the Education Department developed a standard design especially for small schools in rural areas. (Criterion B)
