Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The former Bennison School Residence, designed by the Public Works Department and constructed in 1914, at 310 Port Franklin Road, Bennison is significant. It is a Federation dwelling based on a single corrugated hip roof with a projecting gable set off-centre and a contiguous verandah at a lower pitch that covers the wider section of the facade. Other notable elements include:
The battened rough cast gable end.
The large brick chimney with moulded brick bands and a terracotta pot.
The simple frets to the square verandah.
Multi-pane double hung windows.
Non-original alterations and additions are not significant.
How is it significant?
The former Bennison School Residence is of local historic significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, it is associated with the development of the Bennison district in the early twentieth century, which resulted in the need for a permanent school and teacher's residence. It demonstrates the practice by the Education Department of providing staff accommodation in rural areas. (Criterion A) With the removal of the hall, school and station buildings, the former Bennison School Residence now provides the only tangible evidence of what was the community centre of the Bennison district. (Criterion B)
