Statement of Significance

Queen's Park had developed within a landscape style which had continued since the 1850s until World War One, and hence a mature framework of ornamental deciduous and evergreen exotics was allowed to develop as a backdrop to the addition of the picturesque lake and the rustic lodges and rotundas on its shores. Much of this character has survived, comparing favourably with any other suburban reserve in Melbourne in this respect.

Its designer and curator John Oliver was responsible for noted landscape work in the middle suburbs such as Northcote's High Street boulevard and the now departed, Hicks' tea gardens. It is Essendon's and the region's foremost period park.
