Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The homestead at 5697 South Gippsland Highway, Welshpool, constructed in c.1908-09, is significant. This asymmetrical Federation weatherboard house has a projecting gable alongside the straight enclosed verandah with stop chamfered posts. The transverse roofline includes a brick corbelled chimney and a secondary metal vent. The projecting gable has pressed metal cladding on the gable end and all the gable ends have gable frames and brackets. The front windows are multi-pane, with more narrow windows on the side elevations. The house also features later additions to the rear. Non-original alterations and additions are not significant.
How is it significant?
The homestead at 5697 South Gippsland Highway is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, this house is one of a number of early houses within South Gippsland in isolated areas that demonstrate the pattern of early settlement of the region. This house also demonstrates the development of the immediate area during the early phase of settlement. (Criterion A) 
Aesthetically, this house is a superior and reasonably intact example of a Transitional asymmetrical villa. It is especially notable for the pressed metal cladding on the projecting gable end. (Criterion E)
