Statement of Significance

C - LISTED - LOCAL SIGNIFICANCE

The Church building at 42-42a Regent Street is aesthetically significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of a postwar ecclesiastic style. These qualities include the steeply pitched A-frame roof clad in flat terra cotta tiles, gable panelling and batterning, flat roofed single storey and brick building wings, timber framed windows, wide gable overhangs, series of skylights, large perspec cross on the southern gable, large stained glass window (southern end) and the small stained glass windows (northern end). While significant in its existing state, the original intended design for the building has not been realised, with the northern wall (liturgical west end) being temporary. A Narthex was originally proposed in this location. The Church building at 42-42a Regent Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with the development of the Anglican Church in Belmont during the postwar period.

The Church building at 42-42a Regent Street is socially significant at a LOCAL level. It is recognised and highly valued by the local community for religious reasons.

Overall, the Church building at 42-42a Regent Street is of LOCAL significance.

Recommendation: Opportunities are available to construct a Narthex at the northern end of the building, following the original intended design.
