STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

Uniting Church Manse

115 Lonsdale Street

Built on land originally reserved for the Methodist Church, this house was probably built about 1913 when the congregation moved from McIntyre Street to the new church. It is of local historic and architecectural significance as part of the Uniting Church complex. The architects may have been Clegg, Millar and Cain who designed the new church. Alternatively it could have been designed by Frank Hammond who designed the Masonic Temple opposite and the Presbyterian Sunday School in McIntyre St in 1916 with which it is very similar. It may also have influenced the remodelling of 56 French Street. It is a fine example of the Federation style with an elaborate timber verandah incorporating large arches and projecting gables. The half timbering of the gables includes pressed metal. Other materials and details are typical of the style.

The house is significantly intact and in excellent condition. The hedge is complementary to the house which with its garden it contributes substantially to the streetscape.
