STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

Williams the Shoemen
154 Gray Street

This red brick shop has architectural interest as a fraternal twin of the chemist's shop at 152 Gray Street and has local interest as a shop owned in 1904 or earlier by Rosanna Watts and occupied by Sarah Butler, seller of fancy goods. ([i]) It was described as a shop and dwelling in 1906 and later. ([ii]) The building was typical of the many small businesses lining Gray Street from an early date. ([iii]) The use of red brick and cement render and the parapet detailing are distinctive of the period just before the First World War. It has lost its original verandah and shop front but remains in good condition. The cladding across the first floor facade is only superficial. As a two storey building at the highest point in the Gray Street Commercial area, the shop is critical to the streetscape.
