STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The house at 39 Flinders Parade is aesthetically significant at a REGIONAL level. Although altered, this house still demonstrates original design qualities of the Edwardian style. These qualities include the interlocking gable roof forms, clad in galvanised corrugated iron, whereby two projecting gabled wings flank the building, with remnants of a major gable present in the centre (that has been altered into a second storey gable). Other intact qualities include the two brick corbelled painted and unpainted chimneys (the unpainted chimney has a terra cotta pot), timber framed bay windows which appear to have leadlighted highlights, flat roofed projecting verandah supported by worked timber posts with worked brackets and fretwork valance, flying gables shingling and worked timber elements. The substantial Norfolk pine trees contribute to the significance of the place.

The house at 39 Flinders Parade is historically significant at a REGIONAL level. It is associated with former owners, Dr and Mrs Grimwade, prominent figures in Geelong in medical and yachting circles. The house is also historically significant at a LOCAL level for its associations with the Barwon Heads Estate Company Limited subdivision of 30 March, 1891.
