The cottage at 9 Gooch Street, Thornbury, built in 1888 by the builder, William Barnett, as a speculative venture and subsequently transformed during the Post Federation period.
The cottage at 9 Gooch Street, Thornbury is aesthetically significant to Darebin City.
It is aesthetically significant (Criterion E) as a highly individual cottage as a consequence of the Post Federation works which demonstrate Art Nouveaux influence and emerging Californian Bungalow forms in a picturesque and richly detailed manner. Contributory elements include the asymmetrical verandah form with gable treatment and fretted ornamentation as well as the extensive use offish scale shingles.
