The house known as "Greenock" at 37 McCarron Parade,
Essendon, was in existence in 1892 when it was occupied by John George
Charles. It has historic and aesthetic importance. It is historically
important (Criterion A) to the extent that it demonstrates together
with other examples of its period the first phase in the development
of Essendon west of the railway line as a suburb of the metropolis
capable of attracting prestigious villa development. It is
aesthetically important (Criterion E) as an imposing bi-chromatic
villa demonstrating the influence of the North Italian Renaissance on
villa design towards the end of the nineteenth century, the elements
of the projecting wing being highly demonstrative of this
characteristic.
