Statement of Significance

The house known formerly as "Liewah" at 28 Nicholson Street, Essendon, was built in 1891 for William H. Martin. It is aesthetically important. This importance (Criterion A) arises from the building's status as a representative late Victorian villa of its time enhanced by the lancet arched treatment to the windows of the protruding wing, thereby adding variety in Essendon to this common villa type.
