What is significant? How is it significant? Why is it significant?
'Lauriston' at 7 Laura Street, Moonee Ponds, built by 1891, is significant. It is an asymmetrical late Victorian Gothic influenced villa of black Hawthorns with over-painted dressings, distinguished by the fretted gable ended treatment to the verandah at the entry and by the quatrefoil motif in the protruding wing gable end. The roof cladding is of slate with fish scale banding and the brickwork to the house is on a bluestone plinth.
'Lauriston' is of local aesthetic significance to the City of Moonee Valley.
It is aesthetically significant (Criterion E) for the use of Gothic Revival motifs that give distinction to an otherwise representative late Victorian villa of its type. These motifs include the quatrefoil oculus vent in the protruding gable end and the steeply pitched roofs, especially including the verandah treatment.
