The complex known as Christ Church at nos.1074-1086 Mount Alexander Road, Essendon, was commenced in 1890, the present church having been dedicated in 1921. It is historically important for its place in the religious life of the Anglican community since 1890. The original church building is historically important as an early surviving building of its type and by virtue of its prominence in the streetscape recalling the nineteenth century history of the area. The main church is architecturally important as a picturesque Edwardian Free Style church (Criterion E) comparing with the work of G.F. Ballantyne at Eglinton Street, Moonee Ponds and with the work of Robert Haddon, more generally. It is of interest also for its association with the local architect, Daniel R. Dossetor.
