Statement of Significance

The terraced row of five dwellings known as "Sandford" at nos. 15-23 St. James Street was built in 1886-88. It is important locally as a comparatively rare (Criterion B) two storeyed terrace in Essendon erected close to Essendon railway station and adding diversity to the range of dwelling types erected in the area during the late Victorian Boom period. The adoption of the hipped roof torm is particularly unusual (Criterion B).
