Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The structure located at 20 Henty Street Dunkeld was once associated with a larger house, the home of John and Maraget Griffin and their eleven children. It appears to date from the 1870s or earlier, and was probably built soon after the land was purchased and the first children were born in the early 1860s. The single storey symmetrical timber structure was the detached kitchen. There is little information known about the history of the family or their home although it appears to have been typical of a rural working class family. The kitchen is in fair condition, although the interior is in poor condition. The kitchen retains a very good degree of integrity.

How is it significant?
The kitchen is of historical significance to the township of Dunkeld and the Southern Grampians Shire.

Why is it significant?
The detached timber kitchen at 20 Henty Street is of historical significance for its association with the Griffin family and for demonstrating their typical rural lifestyle.
