Statement of Significance

What is significant?
St Mary's Anglican Church is located on the south west corner of Sterling and Wills Street, in the township of Dunkeld. The church has been constructed in two stages, with the first section (1881) has highly pitched roofs clad in corrugated iron, and is constructed from light brown brick with stone dressings in the Early English Gothic revival style; the latter wing (dating from 1961) also has steeply pitched roofs, which are clad in terracotta tile, and is built of cream brick and is positioned in front of the older building and on the eastern side across its facade. The interiors include a range of memorials, the original pews, fittings such as the altar, podium and decorative works. There has been no architect or builder associated with the design of the Church. Both parts of the church are in excellent condition and retains a very high degree of integrity.

How is it significant?
St Mary's Anglican Church is of historical and architectural significance to the Southern Grampians Shire and to the township of Dunkeld.

Why is it significant?
St. Mary's Anglican Church is of architectural significance as a representative example of the Early English Gothic revival style exhibited in the first section, in its application to places of worship. It demonstrates architectural significance for its use of this style to express religious values, for the range and quality of its interiors, and as a comparison with the churches of other denominations in Dunkeld. St. Mary's Anglican Church is of historical significance as the one of the latest substantial churches to be built in the township, and for its further additions in the 1960s, illustrating the growth of the Anglican faith in the township. As a whole, the complex is historically significant as the expression of the role and position of the Anglican Church and its congregation in the community for over one hundred years.
