Statement of Significance

What is significant?
Red Hill is a single storey asymmetrical timber house with an extensive surrounding timber verandah. The property is location Schurmann's Road, Tarrington. The house was built by Walter and Agnes Schurmann after their marriage in 1913, and Red Hill was run as a successful property by the couple for over 60 years. The house was extended several times as their family (eventually of nine children) grew, until the house reached its current size. The Schurmann family have been continuously involved in the Lutheran Church, particularly supportive of St. Michael's and the community in Tarrington for over 150 years. The house at Red Hill is in good condition, and retains a good degree of integrity. There has been no architect or builder associated with the design.

Red Hill is of historical significance to the district of Tarrington and the Southern Grampians Shire.

Why is it significant?
Red Hill is of historical significance for its long association with the Schurmann family, one of the most important Lutheran families in the Tarrington area since the arrival of Pastor C. W Schurmann in the 1840s. The long and continuous ownership of Red Hill by the Schurmann family amplifies its significance, as does the high degree of integrity of the exterior of the house. It is a good representative example of an early twentieth century homestead which has grown over time to support the growing family of the occupants in a pastoral setting. It reflects pastoral enterprise and the rise of pastoralism in the middle of the twentieth century, where the wool boom made many fortunes, leading to houses being extended.
