Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The cottage and rear outbuildings located at 56 Pioneer Street are constructed of bluestone, handmade brick and timber. It is beleived that they date from the late 1850s to the early 1860s. The cottage may have been built by the Beathe family, who purchased the allotment from the Crown, or by subsequent tenants of Anna Ffrench, the widow of Acheson Ffrench. The cottage retains a high degreee of integrity externally, with original doors, windows and roof shape. The interiors have not been inspected. It appears to be in very good condition.

How is it significant?
The cottage and outbuildings are of historical and architectural significance to the Southern Grampians Shire.

Why is it significant?
56 Pioneer Street is of historical significance for its associations with Anna French, wife of a prominent landowner and magistrate, Acheson Ffrench, who built nearby Monivae. It is of further historical significance for its ability to provide an example of the simple type of residence built by small selector in the mid nineteenth century. It is of architectural signficicance for its clear representation of building techniques and styles typical of the period and locally avaliable materials.
