STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE - HISTORIC PLACES DOCUMENT SHEET - GRC SHEET NO 239

The Stature of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales was erected at an unknown date to commemorate the reign of King Edward VII. The monument of seated King is a fine piece of public statuary and records the affection of the Geelong population to their King.

The history of the origins of this monument remains undocumented but was most probably erected after 1910 by public subscription.

Edward VII 1841-1910 don of Queen Victoria, created Prince of Wales almost immediately after his birth. A literal patron of the arts and science he became a leader of fashionable society and an enthusiastic sportsman. Edward succeeded to the throne on 22 January 1901 at the age of 59 to King, he took a deep interest in foreign policy and his travels helped to promote better international understanding,
