Barwon Heads Jetties & Co-op Sheds

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The Barwon Heads Jetties and former Fishermen's Co-operative Shed in the Barwon Heads Park at 7-71 Ewing Blyth Drive are aesthetically significant at a LOCAL level. The structures make a significant contribution to the visual amenity of the Barwon Rover bank at Barwon Heads.

The Barwon Heads Jetties and former Fishermen's Co-operative Shed in the Barwon Heads park at 7-71 Ewing Blyth Drive are historically significant at a REGIONAL level and socially at a LOCAL level. They are associated with the development of Barwon Heads, particularly thought the Barwon Heads Trust, Geelong Harbour Trust and the formation of the Barwon Heads Fishermen's Co-operative. These structures are also recognized and valued by the local community for their association with the maritime industry.

Overall, The Barwon Heads Jetties and former Fishermen's Co-operative Sheds in the Barwon Heads Park at 7-71 Ewing Blyth Drive of LOCAL significance.

REFERENCES

'Plan of the Flinders Estate, Barwon Heads' in 1887, does not indicate a jetty, yet the 'Barwon Heads Estate' plan of 30th March, 1892, has a jetty clearly marked and located in the position of the present jetties. These plans are in the collection of the Geelong Historical Records Centre. Yet the Barwon Heads Park Trust Minute Books, 1889-1918 record that the newly-appointed Trust offered to 'take charge of the shelter shed and jetty'.
